NOTE: In preparation for Lent, I'm beginning to refrain from drinking liquor, so the next few episodes really won't involved a cool or awesomely inspiring spirit. For this episode, it was just black coffee with no sugar because it's Black History Month!
One thing I did need to spend sometime speaking on is this new (not really "new") wave of reboots. Do people really want to see old 90s shows rebooted, or do they just want old 90s episodes available for streams on Netflix and Hulu. It's a puzzling exchange that we see so often on social media. People are demanding to be able to watch old, nostalgic shows like Martin, Living Single, and of course The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. But to actually get these shows rebooted? You mean, you all actually want to see a 47-year-old Tisha Campbell-Martin reprise a role as Gina? In 2018? That's wild.
My big worry with reboots of 90s Black sitcoms is difficult to jump over. First, nearly every show we hold near and dear to our heart has one vital person who has passed away. In Martin, it's Tommy Ford. In Fresh Prince, it's Uncle Phil (and for In The House, it's Mia Campbell, except she's not dead, she's just a crackhead now).
The second problem is continuation versus new visions. Where can Martin and Gina's love life go from where it left off? It actually didn't leave off at all. In fact, the show was just cancelled. I can't remember the final episode of Martin, honestly. And if the show continues on with Martin's radio career getting better and little Marty Marts running around a house, wouldn't that just be a My Wife And Kids reboot?
For this episode's YOMRVL segment, I received the following questions:
Q: Marvel, I’m sure you’ve had many Valentine Days with your wife. Give us non-married folks some ideas of how to enjoy a good Valentine Day.
REAL ANSWER: I'm not entirely sure if you're single, or dating, or engaged, but you either commit to a full-blown Valentine experience, or you just start an argument on the 13th. There's not much to it, but I think that keeping it romantic and filled with affection, gestures, and gifts is the whole purpose of the "holiday".
YoMRVL: Good job on the podcast, episodes 002 and 003 were pretty funny. The strip club story is pretty hilarious and I believe every bit of it. Also, if you end up getting a Netflix special, I would definitely check that out.
REAL ANSWER: You all be gassing me up, but I would love a $500,000 check if this was possible.
Q: What advice do you have for any guys preparing to propose to their girls soon?
REAL ANSWER: The advice goes on and one, to be fair and honest. Be a little tipsy when you decide to do it, just to get some nerves out. But also, talk to your own family - your parents, elder siblings, aunts and uncles. Talk to them about what marriage is, what it can potentially mean, but most importantly know yourself and your significant other. Don't be that guy proposing to a girl you know you ain't good with, or who has already expressed no interest in getting married. Oh, also, don't finance a ring. Dumb idea! Dumb! Don't do that.
As for storytime, we take it on back to August 25, 2017 in Vegas when we truly, in fact, crashed a party for a gentlemen who we only refer to as Dee. If I had to give pointers on both sides - that is, how to avoid people crashing your party and how to effectively crash a party - I would definitely have to point to the following:
- Keep your group small. - Do your research on the person. Use Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, even LinkedIn so you at least have a backstory on the person if anybody asks. - Stay away from red- and blue-colored garments. Keep it neutral. You never know who's out here bangin'. - If you're throwing a party, keep the invitation off of EventBrite, or make sure it's not public. And even if it is, make sure you're keeping up with your inboxes regarding the event.
Outside of that, crash all the parties you want. Except weddings. People go to jail for those!
