Hey, fam. In hoping that my blog offers a unique and insightful look into how I manage my lifestyle for entertainment, blogging, podcasting, and events. From time to time, I do want to give some tips and provide some information about certain things to help others out there that might be struggling with getting the creative juices flowing.
I use a lot of apps. In fact, I have to emphasize that even more. I use a lot of apps. I've test-driven apps, tried beta versions, given feedback to developers, and have enjoyed life in an easier sense because of this. So, because I use so many apps, I am attached to my phone at the hip (literally) and therefore have grown widely accustomed to having my phone in hand. Enter: Quality Time App
OK. Maybe not the average 27-year-old. I spend my time designing on my phone, updated my calendars, and checking on my content frequently. Very frequently. And it really wasn't until I got to using Quality Time that I really became aware of how often, even for 3 to 5 seconds, that I was using my phone.
From quick ESPN blurbs, to checking text messages, emails, etc, you're swallowed into your phone each time it pings, rings, or sounds off. This is a major distraction for us all. While my mothers might say that it's part of me being a Millennial, I challenge anyone of any age group to download this app and to see how much time they're giving away for free to the attention of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and CNN. Setting limits & boundaries
What I really like about Quality Time is not only does it shame the hell out of you for being on your phone so much, but allows you to set limits and boundaries using the apps customizable Break profiles. These are profiles you can create, customize, and use to set limits to your phone. Rather than putting your phone on Airplane Mode and cutting data completely, these profiles can be set up to restrict only certain apps during the Break period. When you're phone is on break, it politely reroutes the opening of restricted apps back to Quality Time. All notifications are silenced until the break is ended, in which you can then see how many notifications you've received. Here's a look at a few of my profiles.
From 19 permitted apps ("Bae Time"), to 6 permitted apps ("Redlight Zone", used for intense writing sessions in my room when I light my red light bulb), the app allows me to focus my mind and time on being productive with what I have going on around me. Different people might use this app in much more genius ways, such as setting up If This Then That (IFTTT), but for me personally it is helping me keep to the scheduled days I've created for my life personally and business wise. With the IFTTT applets now available for Quality Time, you can set triggers and reactions if your daily usage breaks a certain set limit. As of now, I'm still in the early dieting phase, but hoping to limit myself to no more than 4h 30mins of phone usage. Or instead allowing for my daily usage to be made up of more than just Twitter and social media.
If you're thinking to yourself of how difficult this may be, consider signing up for IFTTT and using the applets for Quality Time. An extra app to also consider would be using Time Tune, which allows you to set daily schedules and weekly routines with alerts, notifications, and more. Together, Time Tune and Quality Time have actually allowed me to stay on task without wandering as well as scheduling digital breaks so I can go a few hours without worrying about my phone. Other Tips and Ideas
Honestly, in taking a deeper look into my own digital diet, aside from just lengths of time, I also considered quality of my use. For social media apps, I've done the following:
I hope showing you a little bit of my world and how I'm working to be a more productive me inspires you to also seek that change as well. Download Quality Time and Time Tune, and let me know how these apps work for you, and how they've changed your time spent bullshitting.
